Need to Repair or Replace your Heating System?

Think about the following areas of importance when considering if it is time to replace your heating system. Don't worry, your certified Shumate technician and Shumate comfort advisor will provide expert service and advice, from total system design to unit replacement. For emergency heating fixes  schedule a 24/7 HVAC service request.

  • Repair Cost

If the cost to repair your furnace is 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of a new unit, replacement makes sense. If you have experienced problems with your heaters (key word-does it apply?) or furnace in the past, it may be more cost effective to consider furnace replacement.
  • Warranty

Consult the Terms and Conditions of your equipment warranty before making heating repair, furnace repair or replacement decisions. Generally, replacement parts fall under the original warranty, so they are only warranted as long as your original warranty is in effect. Repair labor is often not covered by your warranty.
  • Equipment Age

Equipment ages at different rates depending on how well you maintain it and the operating demands you place on it. In general, if your heaters (key word-same?) or gas furnace are over 10- to 15-years old, it likely makes sense to invest in new equipment.
  • Moving or Staying

If you plan to move in the near future, repair is usually a good choice. However, if you plan on staying in your home, it makes sense to invest in an energy efficient furnace for comfort and cost savings.
  • How Well Is Your Existing Furnace Working

Are your gas bills too high? Is your home warm enough?
  • Has your HVAC System had Regular Yearly Maintenance?

You wouldn't dream of letting years go by before changing the oil in your vehicle. Regular preventive maintenance of your HVAC system is just as crucial. The U.S. Department of Energy recommend annual pre-season preventive maintenance check-ups performed by a professional contractor.

Advantages of Preventative Maintenance

Heating Tips

Why is my upstairs so much warmer and drier than my downstairs?

The simple answer is that heat rises – so that even the warm air your downstairs system generates moves upstairs gradually. And, all that warm air tends to dry things out – from your leather furniture to your nose! There are some options that might help the flow of warm air in the house, and a humidifier will remedy the dryness problems associated with winter and heating.

How can I reduce my heating costs in the winter?

Make sure to schedule your preventative maintenance. A maintained system dramatically lengthens the life of your equipment, saving you thousands of dollars by not having to prematurely replace your system. Shumate Comfort Customers enjoy pre-season preventive maintenance check-ups twice a year. They're also entitled to other benefits like priority service and special discounts.

How often should I change my filter?

This really depends on what kind of filter is being used, and how much you use your system. Usually, you want to change your filter at least every three months – but if you are using a high efficiency filter, then it only needs to be changed every six months to twelve months.

Why did my heat pump ice during the winter?

This could be due to low refrigerant charge or a restricted outdoor coil. The outdoor coil may need to be cleaned off and the refrigerant charge would need to be checked.

Why does my circuit breaker keep tripping?

There could be a loose connection on high voltage wiring or the motor could be failing. These connections need to be checked as well as monitoring the amps for the motors and capacitors. The capacitors are used to help larger motors start and should be replaced every 5 years.

Why does my pilot light keep going out?

This could be due to a weak thermocouple or a failed safety switch. The output of the thermocouple needs to be checked. These also need to be changed every 3 years. The safety switch is put inline of the thermocouple. In the event the unit overheats it will shut off the pilot light to stop operations.
